LI Webgrrls Networking Meeting - November 2010
Event date: November 16 2010
Posted by: Ellen DePasquale

Before the meeting even started the attendees were deep into a conversation and everyone was participating. Our comfortable setting always inspires openness and as a group, LI Webgrrls members are a very welcoming bunch.

"I was very impressed with the professional group of women that I met. They were all organized, had something to offer and yet still very warm and inviting. The meeting was well organized, with an agenda and a purpose."
Wendy Smith, Engineer

It was with great pleasure that I had the opportunity to introduce and thank Nicole Pagoulatos, Director of Operations at ExecuTrain of Long Island, our sponsor for the evening and home of LI Webgrrls. After a few words about ExecuTrain of Long Island and the classes they offer, Nicole announced that she will be raffling a free class at the end of the meeting.

  1. Our next meeting is December 21st, the 3rd Tuesday instead of the 4th Tuesday due to Christmas and New Years, at ExecuTrain of Long island. The meeting continues to be free for members, and will be $10 for non-members.
  2. A reminder that Webgrrls International membership is as low as $55/year. It will pay for itself in just 6 meetings!
  3. For everyone using Twitter please follow us at @LIWebgrrls.
  4. The December meeting topic will be Technology goals for 2011, and the January meeting will be Technology action plan for 2011.
  5. Raffles - a free class courtesy of ExecuTrain of Long Island and my book, "It's About Time: Time Management Tips From The Software Revitalist".

We had a round table conversation this month where every attendee offered their best advice related to their profession. With the diversity of careers in the room it was interesting to hear that most of the advice revolved around making sure you know your own needs before engaging in any of their services. From technical support, to insurance, to promotional materials for marketing, everyone agreed that all these services work best when you can clearly communicate your needs. Other advice included doing your due diligence when selecting a service provider or product. This advice had two pieces; gaining knowledge of the product or service itself, and also checking the background of the company you are looking to hire.

Many great issues were brought to light and I thank all the attendees for being so willing to share their advice and experience.

"The subject matter was both relevant and interesting. There was a great deal of give and take during the discussion time, and genuine interest in what each member had to say."
Sheila Ziegler - Bradley Marketing Group

After a short break to stretch and grab another snack, we got to the “Heart and Soul” of every meeting, the full introductions. As we traveled around the room each person shared who they were, what they did, along with the Webgrrls famous what they NEED, and what they OFFER. This allows everyone to gain more insight, however, it is not as easy as it sounds. We break the standard networking mold and encourage creativity.

The size of the group lead to a more intimate and lengthy introductions allowing all of us to continue to learn so much about each other. Women were sharing their success stories and their challenges, which prompted more conversation around each introduction, leading to some exciting, creative thinking! LI Webgrrls networking meetings continue to facilitate relationships that get stronger and stronger with every meeting!

The conversations stopped only for the few minutes it took to pull two cards out of the bowl! The night’s winners were Irene Smith for the free class, and Wendy Smith for my book. Congratulations to both of them!

Because there had been so much conversation revolving around the attendees this evening, from the discussion topic to the extended introductions, no one got up when the meeting was adjourned! Networking continued for quite a while as the last of the snacks were finished and great connections were being made!

Thank you to all who attended for making this another wonderful meeting. LI Webgrrls continues to grow and we had another new member join after this meeting!

If you couldn’t make it on November you missed a really fun and interesting meeting, along with the opportunity to network with great women and I am sorry that you missed it. If you have been thinking about coming to a meeting don't wait any longer!

Be a part of something big! Help drive the direction of LI Webgrrls.
