LI Webgrrls Networking Meeting - October 2010
Event date: October 28 2010
Posted by: Ellen DePasquale

It was a small, intimate, meeting with a handful of Webgrrls members and one guest ready to network. Coffee and snacks were accompanied by the murmur and laughter of the networking that had begun before the meeting even started! But that was nothing compared to the participation in out topic, Email Marketing, as everyone offered their experiences and were very willing to ask many questions.

"I really like that I can see how the meetings are helping specific members become more technology literate and help them with their own business strategies and goals."

It was with great pleasure that I had the opportunity to introduce and thank Nicole Pagoulatos, Director of Operations at ExecuTrain of Long Island, our sponsor for the evening and home of LI Webgrrls. After a few words about ExecuTrain of Long Island and the classes they offer, Nicole announced that she will be raffling a free class at the end of the meeting.

1. Our next meeting is November 16, the 3rd Tuesday instead of the 4th Tuesday due to Thanksgiving, at ExecuTrain of Long island. The meeting continues to be free for members, and will be $10 for non-members. Please Note: we are back to meeting on Tuesday.

2. A reminder that Webgrrls International membership is as low as $55/year. It will pay for itself in just 6 meetings!

3. For everyone using Twitter please follow us at @LIWebgrrls.

4. The December meeting will also be the 3rd Tuesday instead of the 4th Tuesday due to Christmas, so the date is December 21, at ExecuTrain of Long Island. The cost is $10 for non-members, and free for members.

5. Raffles - a free class courtesy of ExecuTrain of Long Island, "the mesh: by Lisa Gansky, courtesy of Webgrrls International, and my book, "It's About Time: Time Management Tips From The Software Revitalist".

Our discussion this month was "Email Marketing." The discussion started with an overview of what email marketing is, and then a few notes on the rules. There are laws and guidelines that differentiate email marketing from SPAM, and it is important to adhere to them. We discussed using an email marketing service, but mostly we talked about good practices. It was interesting to hear everyone's take on their likes and dislikes about the emails they receive. One thing we all agreed on what that there are too many email marketing messages in our own inboxes! That was very tell-tale of the industry as a whole, and how we either sign-up for too many mailing lists, or are put on them without our consent (which is a big mistake email marketers make).

It was a great topic that everyone could easily relate to, which allowed them to contribute to the conversation.

After a short break to stretch and grab another snack, we got to the “Heart and Soul” of every meeting, the full introductions. As we traveled around the room each person shared who they were, what they did, along with the Webgrrls famous what they NEED, and what they OFFER. This allows everyone to gain more insight, however, it is not as easy as it sounds. We break the standard networking mold and encourage creativity. Since we had a small group, everyone had plenty of time to paint an in-depth picture of not only their businesses, but their needs and offers. We really learned more about each other with information and ideas that built on what we had heard in previous months. Even our guest shared openly as she needed assistance with all the changing rules with online credit card processing. It is great to listen to how unique everyone is, and how we all make such a strong group with interesting opinions, offers, and experiences, creating a tremendous value to everyone in attendance. LI Webgrrls networking meetings continue to facilitate relationships that get stronger and stronger with every meeting!

We could have talked for many more hours, but as the clock ticked it was time for the raffles. The night’s winners were Denise Bocchicchio for the free class, Regina Finkelstein for "the mesh", and Sheila Ziegler for my book. Congratulations to both of them!

We moved to the casual networking as women continued to talk about their NEEDS and OFFERS as well as the possible topics covered earlier. It is amazing how fast two hours can go when everyone is so involved!

Thank you to all who attended for making this another wonderful meeting. LI Webgrrls continues to grow and we had another two new members join after this meeting!

If you couldn’t make it on October 16th you missed a really fun and interesting meeting, along with the opportunity to network with great women and I am sorry that you missed it. If you have been thinking about coming to a meeting don't wait any longer!

Be a part of something big! Help drive the direction of LI Webgrrls.
