Webgrrls LI Networking Meeting
Event date: June 22 2010
Posted by: Ellen DePasquale

Webgrrls gathered early on June 22, grabbed some coffee and snacks, and the meeting started on time, setting the pace for an information-packed meeting. Interaction started immediately and once the Webgrrls business announcements and news were concluded, the discussion topic took center stage for a 1/2 hour of great contributions. Once again the group of diverse and dynamic women brought a wealth of experience to the meeting giving LI Webgrrls networking a depth that is not found at any other event!

"The community of professional, talented women, I could feel the combined energy from all the powerful women in the room and visualize all we can accomplish together. ( I also liked the refreshments and delicious coffee)."
Hannah Lusterman - SOC Referral Marketing

No more looking back. This was the third LI Webgrrls meeting of 2010 and we are planning for the future. There was a close to unanimous vote to continue through the summer, so we scheduled meetings for July 27 and August 24. (And, I am happy to report we already have several RSVPs for these meetings!)

It was with great pleasure that I had the opportunity to introduce and thank Nicole Pagoulatos, Director of Operations at ExecuTrain of Long Island, our sponsor for the evening and home of LI Webgrrls. After a few words about ExecuTrain of Long Island and the classes they offer, Nicole reminded us that ExecuTrain is still offering two free classes to anyone who has been laid-off in the past year. Additionally, she offered a 10% discount to Webgrrls for any company interested in attending the QuickBooks 2008 all-day training class on July 28. When calling to register for this class simply tell her your discount code is WEBGRRLS. (And by the way, I will be teaching this class!)

This month I was able to read an incredible posting from the Webgrrls listserve mailing list that announced a job opening for a Mid-Sr project manager paying $110-$120K per year! It is great to see such valuable information being shared amongst the members!

Other news included:
1. Starting in September the LI Webgrrls meetings will be free for members to attend, and will be $10 for non-members.

2. Reminder when registering for Webgrrls meetings, members need to remember to use their member number so they are recognized as members and will not be required to pay for the meeting.

3. For everyone using Twitter please follow us at @LIWebgrrls.

This month's discussion topic was "Online Marketing" and although I knew it was a broad topic, I trusted the group would find their niche. The majority of the discussion revolved around blogging; how to, why to, where to, and everything else. The best part was that we had several bloggers present as well as many non-bloggers so there were plenty of questions - and plenty of answers. The conversation eventually turned to social media, focusing on Facebook and how it can be used for promoting business. of course this could have been a two-hour discussion on its own, but we managed, as always, to impart useful information. Additionally, several of the women with experience in this area offered to answer questions after the meeting as well - which resulted in a lively business card exchange during the informal networking.

"These meetings are very informative of up to date information, women share their experiences (good/poor) and are willing to offer help, guidance to anyone who asks."
Irene Smith - Insurance Broker/Defensive Driving instructor

Having briefly introduced the members during the Webgrrls announcements, we were ready to get to the “Heart and Soul” of the meeting…the full introductions. Our journey around the room included the opportunity for each person to tell us who they were, what they did, along with the Webgrrls famous what they NEED, and what they OFFER. I love how much this surprises our first-time attendees and how much it makes everyone think about what they are going to say. The results are insightful - literally - and allow for deeper connections and conversations that would otherwise have been unknown. Who says networking has to be strictly business? Networking is about building relationships, and month after month that happens at the LI Webgrrls meetings!

Everyone was eager to win the ExecuTrain free class raffle and a copy of my book It's About Time: Time Management Tips from The Software Revitalist. A guest did the honors and the night’s winners were Kim Beckers for the free class and Carol Berger for the book. Congratulations to both of them!

Refreshments and networking continued and for the first time this year I witnessed more one-on-one conversations. Targeted networking brings great results!

Thank you to all who attended for making this another wonderful meeting. And speaking of results, three women became new members within days of attending the June meeting!

If you couldn’t make it last month you missed networking with some great women and I am sorry that you missed it, but, we have two exciting meeting this summer; July 27 where our discussion topic will be "Your data - In the Clouds vs. On the Ground" and August 24
where we will be "Brainstorming for LI Webgrrls Workshop Topics."

Be a part of something big! Help drive the direction of LI Webgrrls.

RSVP Now for our next meeting!

Looking forward to seeing you there!
