NYC Webgrrls Networking Meeting
Event date: February 12 2009
Posted by: Kristin Vincent

Wow! If last Thursday evening was any indication of the enthusiasm for networking and connecting, we are in for a huge year for NYC Webgrrls. With over 100 RSVPs (we had to close the RSVP list) it was “standing room only” and the room was abuzz with excitement to get to know one another…new ideas, great opportunities…perhaps the next great connection.

“It's a great experience to be in a room with tech savvy women that come together in an effort to network and exchange business ideas.”

We kicked off the introductions by introducing Eleonora Anastasia, District Vice President of AXA Advisors, our new host for 2009. Everyone smiled when Eleonora said, she is the “Suzy Ormond you can actually call” and from there, Nelly Yusupova, NYC Webgrrls chapter leader and MC extraordinaire, focused the group with her “three minute networking exercise” to ensure that we could get through everyone in the room.

“I have been attending Webgrrls events off and on over the past five years. Thanks to the enthusiasm and organizational skills of Nelly’s team, they just continue to get better and better.”

With that many in attendance, we had to keep strict time limits on the introductions (one minute) and over the next hour and one half, we realized just how much talent was in the room. There were graphic designers, instructional designers, web developers, copywriters, bankers, recruiters, several marketing and PR reps, and a handful of documentary filmmakers. And there was a nice balance of freelancers looking for clients, companies looking to hire, people looking for fulltime jobs, recruiter looking for top talent, and life coaches ready to help people identify the next great step in their lives.

The needs of the group were varied as well. People needed illustration work, advice on SEO, suggestions for email service providers, help with video editing, and thoughts on how to best leverage social media. The group also had a lot to offer others, like brainstorming around brand creation, counseling on crisis or corporate communication, site audits for usability, and advice on how to take the plunge to start your own venture.

As the introduction finished, the excitement grew as the room ignited into the informal networking phase. The room buzzed as people connected with each other. Quite a few people were exchanging business cards until the very end of the night.

“Nelly and co. run a fabulous, informative group of professionals. I've been a member since 1998 (or 1999?), and will continue to be for many years to come!”
Nancy L Hoffmann

It looks like 2009 is going to be a great year for Webgrrls NYC. I always leave meetings feeling jazzed about the future, but the full room amped up the excitement last week. For the retuning members, it's always good to see you. And for all the new faces, I hope to see you on March 11 for the next networking meeting!  RSVP Now!
