Last Tuesday's Blogging Basics Workshop packed the house! Our chapter leader and Webgrrls' CTO, Nelly Yusupova, walked the group through the new terminology around blogging, a typical blog's anatomy, and how to bookmark and read blogs you're interested in.
People who attended had different reasons for coming out. Some came because clients have started asking them to create blogs and they need to learn more. Others are thinking about starting their own blogs or making existing blogs more professional. Regardless of the motivation, we all walked away with a better understanding of what blogs are and how they work.
Nelly gave key advice to people considering writing their own blogs, such as what subject matter to focus on and how to approach a posting schedule. She showed us an assortment of features you can add to your blog, like tag clouds and calendars, and gave examples of the difference between widgets and plugins. She also talked about the pros and cons to various RSS readers, the difference between hosted and self-hosted blogging platforms, and how to decide which platform, like WordPress or Movable Type, to use for your particular blogging needs. At the end, Nelly wrapped up by mentioning the top six things you should do to market your blog.
Now that people have a better grasp of the basics, they're ready for the next blogging event: How to Build a Successful Blog. If you have not RSVP'd yet, please do so ASAP. We hope to see you there!
