icolorfolder-logo.jpgI am always looking for ways to boost my productivity. One tool that I discovered recently that helped me navigate through my Windows folders is iColorFolder. It is an open source application that allows Windows users to assign custom colors to your regular yellow folder icons.  All you have to do is right click on the folder and select the color.

How does this tool help me be more productive? I color code the folders that I use most frequently so I can spot them faster.

“Read Later” bookmarking tool

I browse the web and search for information constantly and as I do, I stumble upon different websites that I would like to read but can’t do it at the time of the search because I’m busy doing something else and don’t want to get distracted.

I used to save all of my “read later” websites into a folder called “To Read Later” in my browser bookmarks.  Well, now there is a faster and better way….Instapaper.com

How it works

  1. Go to Instapaper.com and register (no information other than username is required).
  2. Drag this bookmarklet to your bookmarks toolbar:
    Read Later
  3. Then, next time you’re on a site that you want to read later, just click that bookmark and it will be added to your Instapaper reading list.  When you have time to read, you go to Instapaper.com on your computer or phone and get whatever you wanted to read.

Why this tool better than a browser bookmark and Del.icio.us tools?

  1. This tool saves you time.  All you have to do to add a website to your reading list is click a button.  No bookmark filing and No tagging is involved.
  2. Very easy to manage - All of your links are sorted into three groups: Unread, Recently Read, and Recently Skipped.   Clicking one of the ‘Unread’ links automatically moves the site link into the ‘Recently Read’ category.  You can also easily manage your links with the Edit and Delete options provided next to each link.
  3. The site provides an RSS feed for your bookmarks.  If you don’t want to keep going back to the site, you can read all of your articles through your RSS reader.

I have been using this tool for a week now and I’m loving it.  It has saved me a lot of time.

Teams and Advisors are Important - Business in a Vacuum Very Rarely Creates Success

Kevin Kennedy at the Webgrrls HotseatEntrepreneurs and career professionals often find themselves stuck in a business situation and can’t seem to identify a clear path around, over, or through the barrier that is keeping them from reaching the next level. Perhaps they are too close to the issue or too connected to it. Perhaps they have a mental block and just can’t come up with the ideas, or, in some cases, maybe, they are the problem.

Finding an advisory group, whether it is formal or informal, is very important. They can be your friends, colleagues, or associates. Some of them should come from different industries and bring with them different ideas and perspectives. We need people…success is very rarely created in a vacuum.

We saw the importance and the immediate benefit of leveraging the collective knowledge of the New York City Webgrrls last week. I facilitated the Webgrrls HotSeat, a workshop designed to help the participants clearly identify an immediate issue that is holding them back and then collectively offer ideas to help that person address the issue and at least start the process of getting past it. It was a great session and it was amazing to see the depth of knowledge and the willingness of all of the participants to share their information and their insights.

Below are some examples of the issues that the participants were facing at the Webgrrls HotSeat last week.
