As a web developer I have always steered away from using Flash website because they can not be indexed by search engines. Search engines traditionally only read and understand text. Even when using images web developers were advised to use the “alt” tag. The Alt tag allows you to provide an alternative text description of your image to ensure that the search engines could understand what the image is about.

Now a new technology will make flash websites more search engine friendly….

Copywriting Tools that Work For You (& Your Business)

You’re running (or working for) a business and want to get the word out, but you don’t have the time or writing skills to get your point across.

What to do? Here are three things you may want to consider:

SEO (search engine optimization): Writing with specific keywords in mind is a key to search engine success. Search engines pick up on the words you designate crucial to your business, to help place you at the top when a potential client is searching for you or the kinds or services or products you offer. Don’t be afraid to blog or write multiple articles centering on similar topics – this will only boost your business in the search engines.

Ghostwriting: Having a professional writer is like having a partner in business you never knew you had. Ghostwriters will work closely with you to successfully market your product. Whether it be for a website, press kit, marketing materials or other services, a good ghostwriter will learn the ins and outs of your business and will be able to get your point across more effectively (and free you up to do what you do best).

• ePress Kits: It’s safe to say that e-mailing has become a mainstay of communication, and not just for sending pictures. Building an electronic (”e”) press kit offers a complete PR kit for your business in an easy-to-send file (usually a pdf). Press releases, press clippings, interviews, your bio and other components are compiled in one convenient file. You won’t have to struggle to get the word out about your business - a click of the mouse is all it will take!

What is SEO copywriting? (Part 1 of 2)

Everyone wants great search engine rankings, but most still don’t understand how to get there. (And there are those who think they know and don’t want to listen to anyone else…but that’s a whole other story.)

For the rest of us who always want to learn more, when it comes to natural or organic search engine rankings (as opposed to the kind you pay for, like pay per click), there are a number of issues to consider.

Back in the day, SEO (search engine optimization) copywriting wasn’t something most businesses even knew they were looking for. But all that has changed, and understandably so – these days, who isn’t trying to crack the Google code and catapult themselves and their business to the top of the search engine pages??

Most people do not (please don’t be offended) know how to write good, effective SEO copy – they just don’t. Good SEO copy needs to “speak” to two audiences – the target market who ultimately needs to make a buying decision AND the search engines. Both need to be spoken to within the same copy. And that same copy needs to do its job so well that both groups think that that copy is directed right at them.

A tall order, huh?

Learn more specifically what you need to know about good SEO writing for your website and other online marketing in my next blog entry.

Microsoft Social Media Outreach Case Study

Last week, I had the pleasure moderating a panel/case study at the BlogHer Business ‘08 conference here in New York City, where I interviewed three prominent Microsoft bloggers. The panelists were Ani Babaian, Sara Ford and Ariel Stallings, and we discussed how their blogging helps to build a bridge between the world of corporate social media and their own personal technology passions.

I really enjoyed getting to know these three very dynamic women and learning how their efforts are helping Microsoft add a new dimension to the corporate perception.

Ani Babaian is a senior product manager with the LiveSearch team at Microsoft and she blogs on a variety of topics with a focus on SEO.

Sara Ford is a program manager for codeplex.com, Microsoft’s open source project hosting site. She is a hardcore techie and blogs about the Microsoft product that she works with, interacts with the open source community, and participates in the conversations to help users find solutions to their issues.

Ariel Stallings is a marketing manager with staffing marketing. It’s her job to convince you that working at Microsoft is cool. She profiles microsoft employees by focusing on the diversity and life style of the Microsoft employees…their fun side…their personal side.

Create a successful SEO campaign

People always ask me, “Since I show up in the search engine results sometimes, do I need to invest in SEO?”

My answer is always this….If your most of your customers and your business come from the search engines, it is important that you invest money on Search Engine Optimization (SEO). If most of your clients come from word of mouth or local marketing strategies because you mostly service your clients locally, then it may not be so important, although you should think about utilizing the web to grow your business.

Generally, the success of an SEO campaign is not the result of just ONE thing and requires a lot of work on a monthly basis and a lot of patience.

Matt McGee, published a great SEO Success Pyramid, that outlines the steps from most important to least important to achieving success with SEO.

You can download and print the JPEG version of the Pyramid and read the explanations of each step with links to additional info.
