Staying Ahead This Holiday Season

For many of us, December is not only a fun month of good cheer with friends and colleagues, but also the end of year “sky is falling” scramble to make sure all loose ends are tied up.  How do you make sure you stay ahead in the office and at home before you stop singing I’ll Be Home For Christmas?

1. Prioritizing

What HAS to get done before you run off for the rest of the year?  Can you push back on items that are not end of year critical and set expectations to get to those items in 2009 (yes, 2009!)?  Don’t forget to do your shopping!

2. Thanks for the Invite, but…

You don’t have to go to every holiday soiree you’re invited to.  I know I know, you like being a social butterfly.  But if you aren’t guaranteed to connect with a friend (whom you didn’t see at the last holiday party a few hours previous), nor able to truly network/socialize and meet new people, then why spend some of your precious time at a potential dud of a party?  You can politely decline invites – just make sure you follow up with a communication so you are not perceived as a flake – for example “Thanks for thinking of me but can’t make it.  Please keep me informed of other gatherings in the new year.”  At least you’ll keep getting invites if you like.

3. But What About Me?

Yes, you – you still need to make sure you eat, sleep, bathe and get exercise during this crazy month.  Don’t compromise on any of your routine especially if you fall into the category of people who get paranoid about gaining weight during the holiday season.  Maybe this month you hit the gym during lunch or pack your meals and snacks so you can spend your prime time with friends and family.

So remember, prioritize, ditch what you really don’t need to do or go to right now, and keep your routine – this will keep you healthy, wise, and maybe a bit more wealthy this holiday season.
