I am the New Marketing Summit today in Foxboro, MA. The two day conference focuses on online marketing and social media.

In one of the sessions, Freddie Laker, talked about the social media trends. Here is a summary of his presentation that I wanted to share with you.

  • Social everything – Pretty soon social networking will not be a buzzword anymore, it will be an assumed functionality
  • Google friend connect is the next big thing. The friend connect framework allows people to add social networking functionality to their site for free.
  • Aggregation tools will be used heavily to filter the noise – Some examples of existing aggregating tools were: mint.com, friendfeed.com, alltop.com, ping.fm second brain, digsby.com
  • Participation in social media to control search – Social Media websites get indexed by Search engines really well and all of the conversations about your company that happen in the blogosphere and on social networks will be available to anyone who performs a search.  The only way to ensure that users get your company perspective is to participate in social media.
  • Social networking is going mobile – If you want to be ahead of the curve, build applications & utilities that people can use on their phones.
  • Watch youth to stay ahead – Your 6 year old child can tell you a lot about how the next generation will be engaging online and how they will be using all of the tools that are available to them.

Freddie concluded with a great sentence: “The future is for those that have courage”. Even though we are in tough economic state, now is the time toss aside a small budget and do something experimental. If it works, you will be way ahead of the curve and create a great following.  If it doesn’t, at least you tried.  Learn from your mistakes and try again.
