Building credibility is important. All of the things Jaime suggested are valid. However I have found that in this virtual information age much more is needed, despite the recommendation to push back. www.personavita.com is a site I have used to build my credibility with employers, friends and family. There is no better way to build credibility then being trusted and having essentially your work/life philosophy out on display.

I think that part of the answer to your question involves delegating. No one person can do it all. Being reliable involves being able to spread tasks among other credible professionals and pull it all together for your client.
