Use your cell phone data connection to go online

I have been working on the road for the last two weeks and was pleasantly surprised by how easy it was for me to find an internet connection…using my Palm Centro phone as a modem. The process of connecting to the Internet via the phone’s wireless connection is called tethering.

What do you need to go online?

  • A web-enabled phone with a built-in modem (if you’re not sure if your phone has a built-in modem, check your phone User Guide or call your phone service provider)
  • Data cable
  • Software CD provided by your phone company

I installed the VZAccess Manager Software provided to me by Verizon, connected my Palm Centro to my laptop using my sync cable (aka data cable) and I was online in no time and the connection was pretty fast (remember, your connection speed will depend on the coverage in your area). The only drawback to using your phone as a modem vs a PC or USB card is that you can not talk on the phone while you are connected to the internet.
