Flash Websites are Becoming More Search Engine Friendly

As a web developer I have always steered away from using Flash website because they can not be indexed by search engines. Search engines traditionally only read and understand text. Even when using images web developers were advised to use the “alt” tag. The Alt tag allows you to provide an alternative text description of your image to ensure that the search engines could understand what the image is about.

Now a new technology will make flash websites more search engine friendly….

Adobe Flash LogoGoogle, Yahoo and Adobe have all worked together on a technology that will enable search engines to index Flash content. More importantly, Adobe’s technology ensures that existing Flash technology users will not have to modify any of their code….it will be automatically searchable by search engines.

Google announced that it has already added the optimized Flash Player to its search engine, while Yahoo plans to add the technology to a future update of Yahoo Search.

According to TechCrunch, the new technology won’t solve all the Flash content showing up on search engines.

Becoming visible is one thing, actually ranking highly is another. Google currently can find about 73 million Flash files on the Web. But until Adobe makes it easy for the average Webmaster or blogger to link deeply into those Flash files, they are not likely to appear at the top of many search results

It would be interesting to see reports from SEO experts on how these changes will affect real life search results. I would not jump to using Flash technology on your website just yet.
