Search engine optimization (SEO) is extremely important to any website or blog.  The higher the search engines rank your website the more website traffic gets directed to your web site, which you will hopefully be able to convert into loyal users.

Although SEO can get quite complex, there are simple things you can do yourself to ensure that your business website ranks higher in search engines for specific keywords.  The first thing you need to do is to define the keywords and phrases you want to optimize for.

Need some inspiration? Then check out the winners of the 2008 International Design Excellence Awards, or IDEA.
Hamilton Medical G5 GUI As an interaction designer, I went straight to the category on Interactive Product Experiences. There was no gold winner in this category, just three silvers and one bronze. A winner making high claims is the Hamilton Medical G5 GUI, a new medical device that boasts it eliminates many of the chances of human error in the process of delivering respiratory care.
Sugar Interface I was happy to see a nod to the Sugar User Interface from the nonprofit group One Laptop per Child, the which aims to provide every kid in developing countries with a personal laptop.
But we’re not just talking online design. Winning designs range from print to apparel. There’s a category for just about everything. Here are just a few:

  • Ecodesign
  • Entertainment
  • Home Living
  • Leisure and Recreation
  • Personal Accessories
  • Transportation
Even if most of us work in a virtual space, we can still draw inspiration from our fellow designers who have approached problems in other media in new and interesting ways. Just browsing this list has reminded me to not just go after something no one else is doing but to also rethink and challenge traditional designs that we’re taking for granted. Here are some of my favorites:
The Greencard: An eco-friendly business card Greencard design
Eva Solo Bin: A trash bin that boasts it solves every problem found with most current designs Eva Solo Bin
Tribord CR900: A lifejacket designed specifically for women Tribord CR900 Life Jacket
SENZ XL Storm Umbrella: The first aerodynamic golf umbrella SENZ XL Storm Umbrella

LifestreamingLifestreaming is an online record of a person’s daily activities compiled together by an application into one blog-like “stream”.  Through a lifestreaming application, you can specify which accounts you want to add (i.e. your Blog posts, Flickr photos, del.icio.us bookmarks, Facebook posts, Twitter posts, etc) and the lifestreaming application will combine all of your content into one stream.

Richard MacManus from ReadWriteWeb.com wrote a great post on how companies are trying to find a way to leverage lifestreaming to promote their brands.

To back up its case for brands using lifestreaming tools, Pheedo points to a recent Universal McCann report stating that content consumption outside of websites has increased 153% in the last 9 months. Overall, 53% of online users are consuming content outside of a publisher’s site – through the use of widgets, RSS readers, social networks and mobile devices.

These statistics indicate that as a company doing business online, if you are not engaging with your users outside your website, you are loosing out.

So, if you are not familiar with Lifestreaming and are not leveraging it for your business, here are some resources that will help you get started:
